Easter Activity with Kids: Homemade coloured Easter eggs using whole food ingredients

Go old school and use the ingredients in your kitchen as colour dyes for Easter Eggs.

We love these colours of the rainbow and the whole food sources. Here’s what we chose: hibiscus, red cabbage, turmeric, onion skin and coffee.

What you need:

  • Hard boiled eggs
  • White vinegar – 2 tbsp. per colour
  • Hibiscus leaves – green/blue – 4 tbsp.
  • Red cabbage – light blue – 100g, chopped
  • Turmeric – yellow – 4 tbsp.
  • Onion skins – orange – 4 cups
  • Coffee beans – brown – 100g

Prepare the coloured dye:

For each colour, place 2 tbsp. white vinegar in a medium pot and add 1 litre of water.

Bring it to the boil and add the colour dye ingredients of your choice for the egg colour. Have some fun and experiment with the colours you can create!

Then reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 30 minutes.

Let the coloured water cool and then pour the water through a strainer to remove any food pieces. You should be left with an amazing pot of colour.

Repeat with as many different colours as you want!

Colour the eggs:

Hard boil your eggs as normal.

Add your hard-boiled eggs to the dye water and let them soak for a minimum of 30 minutes.

When your egg reaches the desired colour, remove from the dye and pat dry.

Why not plan a fun treasure hunt for all the family using your beautiful and bright coloured eggs along with Easter treats, hide eggs around the garden, house and draw up a map for the little and big kids!
